Will the Australian Peugeot 3008 SUV Release Have a 96kW Petrol Option?

The Peugeot 3008 SUV has been well received here in Australia as a genuine European styled SUV that offers something different. However, it is true that we don’t see here all the variants that are available in other markets. This is particularly true when you examine the availability of certain engine types for various car models. Peugeot is not alone in this, as an export market we often get less choice and cars that are deemed to be more suitable to the Australian road conditions. So, it’s always welcome when we can see a car manufacturer give the Aussie driver more choice.

Peugeot Australia Considering Petrol Option

We have recently learned that Peugeot Australia is considering making their three cylinder turbocharged engine available on more local models. This petrol engine can generate 96kW of power, and it could be an option on the 3008 SUV crossover and the 308 Touring wagon. This is the same power plant that is used on other Peugeot models, such as the 2008 SUV, the 208 hatch, and the 308 small hatch.

The Pure Tech Engine Choice

This engine is a pure tech 1.2 litre turbocharged three cylinder engine that delivers the 96kW of power at 5,500 rpm and at 1,750 rpm the engine can put out 230 Nm of torque. Peugeot has claimed a 0-100km/hr sprint in 10.5 seconds when the engine is paired with their six speed automatic transmission. The combined cycle fuel consumption is a 5.5L/100km, and this is assisted by the relatively light kerb weight of 1,270kg. In the overseas market, this engine is available with either a six speed manual or a six speed automatic transmission. Here in Australia, we only have the automatic transmission available at this time.

The PR manager for Peugeot Citroen Australia is Tyson Bowen, and he stated “The adoption of the PureTech, turbo petrol, drivetrain in a broader range of Australian bound Peugeot models is currently being investigated with PSA in France,” and he went on to add “It could easily be added to more models if the business case makes sense for Australia.” If this powertrain is made available here, it could very well serve as a new entry point for both the 3008 and the 308 Touring lineups.
