Peugeot has announced that they will be releasing a new special edition variant of their sporty 308 GTi hot hatch. This will give the car a brand new sleek bodykit and plenty of other features and tech to make the Peugeot 308 GTi price worth the investment. This will be known as the Peugeot 308 GTi Sport and demand here is Australia is likely to be high. Interestingly the buyers will even be able to get some specialised performance car training as part of the deal. Let’s take a closer look at what we know about this latest hot hatch variant.
A Brief Overview
Peugeot has been working hard to build their reputation here, and they are delivering some fantastic cars with genuine European styling. One of the success stories has been the 308 GTi hot hatch, and many drivers can attest to how it can put a smile on their face. This car has an incredible engine that may even be the fasted 1.6 litre powerplant in the entire segment, putting rivals like the VW Golf GTi and Renault Megane RS to shame. For this reason, Peugeot has decided to release a limited edition variant, and Peugeot Australia has secured 20 unit for our market. Essentially, what you get is a fresh new five piece body kit that adds a great deal of aggression to the sporty appearance. There are also metallic paint options and an attractive price for those that want a 308 GTi with a little more exclusivity. Overall this isn’t an entire reworking of the car, the same hot hatch we’ve come to know and love is still under the skin, but the new body kit combined with the metallic paint options looks fantastic. To sweeten the deal, Peugeot are also including some professional performance driving instruction to bring the 308 GTi Sport driver up to speed quickly.
The New 308 GTi Sport Bodykit
The Peugeot 308 GTi 2019 Sport edition will come with a unique body kit comprised of five pieces, they are a brand new front spoiler, rear bumper bar extensions, side skirting, a new rear diffuser and a rear spoiler over the tailgate. This kit certainly helps the 308 GTi Sport to stand out from the standard 308 GTi models.
The Same Excellent Engine
The Peugeot 308 GTi Sport will still use the same engine as the regular cars. This is a 1.6 litre turbocharged four cylinder petrol engine that generates 200kW of power and 300 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a six speed manual transmission. This considerable power output makes this 1.6 litre engine one of the most powerful powerplants available on the market. The regular 308 GTi can go from 0-100km/h in 6 seconds, and some independent reviewers have surpassed this time by switching to racing tyres. The car is front wheel drive only, so the drive system uses a Torsen limited slip differential to manage and make the most of the available traction.
Suspension and Braking
The Peugeot 308 GTi Sport has the same wider front and rear track and a lowered stiffened suspension. This provides excellent handling when combined with the accurate steering. The brakes are bigger withe four piston calipers up front fitted with 380mm braking discs. Because the 308 GTi is front wheel drive, you really need that Torsen limited slip differential, it really makes all the difference when you want to access that low down 300 Nm of torque for fast accleration. The chassis is simple and effective the damping, stiffness, and spring rates are well calibrated. The result is very tidy control over the body, and you have just enough wiggle room to flow through a bend without it devolving into a wobbly mess.
The Driving Experience
Because the Peugeot 308 GTi Sport limited edition is the same under the awesome looking body kit you get the same driving experience as the standard car. Driving a 308 GTi is an exciting and frantic affair as you power through corners gripping and scrabbling for the ideal line of exit. All rather thrilling stuff, especially when all the dials literally turn red as you redline the car.
Standard Equipment Highlights
The Peugeot 308 GTi Sport will have the same standard equipment as the regular car. This includes features, such as cushioned front bucket seats, a three spoke sporty leather steering wheel, a rich and detailed red interior decor, a limited slip differential, LED headlights with auto high beam, front and rear parking sensors, blind spot monitoring, lane keep assist, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition, 19” alloy wheels and the latest 2nd generation i-Cockpit digital dashboard. The i-Cockpit system uses a 9.7” capacitive colour touchscreen to control the media, the head up instrumentation and it has Mirror Link for full Android Auto and Apple CarPlay support.
Professional Driving Lessons
When you purchase the limited edition Peugeot 308 GTi Sport it comes with a driver training package. This is a special driving course worth $200, and it’s run by Driving Dynamics for teaching performance driving. There are Driving Dynamics courses available in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney at the moment, but Queensland and Western Australia will be added in the very near future. This is a great way for drivers to get to grips with their new 308 GTi Sport in a controlled and safe environment. This also sounds like it will be a real fun day out for any dedicated petrolhead.
