Although the Peugeot 2018 models have received a great reception, the brand is setting its sights on the future with the possibility of electric vehicles. The PSA Group, the parent company of Opel, DS, Citroen, and Peugeot, has established a new standalone division focused on electric vehicles to chase the EV industry leaders.
The EV Race
It looks like the PSA Group intends to catch up with the competition in the EV race. This appears to be a reaction to the Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi Alliance. The company is intending to build a spinoff unit that will “respond to the challenges” created by energy transition and develop a coherent and efficient offering of Electric solutions. The company recognises the ever changing landscape of the automotive industry and sees an opportunity to be seized. According to Citroen CEO Linda Jackson, the Group will be able to launch an “unprecedented technological offensive” that will be possible with the multi energy platforms.
The primary challenge for the new business unit will be to provide the best possible vehicles at the right time. However, the unit will benefit from years of experience within the Group to ensure the best economic conditions to launch electric vehicles in the marketplace.
This is not the first time the PSA Group has investigated electric vehicles, but this does signify a most serious commitment to the concept of e-mobility. It also appears that the manufacturers are confident of massive progress. In 2017, Citroen announced a promise that 80% of the brand’s vehicle line would be driven by the new “e-CMP” platform and electrified by 2023. It is anticipated that the first vehicles on the platform will arrive at some point in 2019.
What This Means for Peugeot
This is an exciting prospect for Peugeot as it is unlikely that the brand will allow their stablemate to race ahead. This means that we could see new EV models or electrified versions of the current Peugeot 2018 models in the coming years. Since the SUV segment continues to see the most sales growth, it seems a safe assumption that we may see an EV Peugeot SUV very soon.
As yet Peugeot HQ has yet to formalise plans for an EV range, but the brand’s commitment to the new division suggests that we will see some exciting new offerings very soon.
