As your Peugeot dealers, we are always looking for exciting news about new cars and developments. The car industry moves fast, and innovation drives every manufacturer to new heights in car design. One of the most popular models in the Peugeot stable is the 308, and a new generation could be set for a launch in 2020 according to a French report. Let’s take a closer look at the details released so far.
The New Peugeot 308
The original 308 small family car was first released in 2007, and there have been several revisions since that time. It has been a solid release from Peugeot with steady sales worldwide, and a new generation is likely soon or later. This will be a new small car range that will feature a lot of new technology and be available with electrified powertrains. The report from Caradisiac has claimed that the next generation 308 will be launched sometime in 2020. There will be wagon and hatchback body styles, and it will be heavily influenced by some recent releases, such as the 508 sedan, the 508 touring wagon, and the 3008 SUV.
Under the Skin
Apparently, a revised version of the EMP2 platform will be used as a base for this small car release. This current version of this platform is used to underpin the Peugeot 3008 and the Citroen C4 Picasso. The report also states that the next generation 308 will be a lighter car than the current generation models. Power will be supplied via a range of small capacity petrol and diesel turbocharged engines. It’s likely that these engines will start with a base unit of 1.0L and perhaps rise to a maximum size of 2.0L capacity.
There will also be a variety of electrified powertrains available, and one of those will be a plug-in hybrid used on the Peugeot 308 GT and 308 GTi. The report states that the 308 GT will have front wheel drive and that the electric engine system will generate 164 kW of power (220hp). The 308 GTi will have a dual motor setup with a combined output of 224 kW of power (300hp) married to an all wheel drive system. The 308 GTi may be capable of a 50-60 km all electric range on a single charge.
There may also be a new infotainment interface, a fully digital driver instrument cluster, new driving assistance systems and level two autonomous driving capability. This will use lane assistance technology in traffic snarl ups, using the adaptive cruise control to self stop and start. We will only know for certain how accurate this report is when the new generation 308 is scheduled for its reveal at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show.
