The sign may appear all over Australia, but many drivers remain confused about loading zones. Although “No Parking” signs are relatively straightforward, loading zones don’t often feature clarification or further instruction, so does this mean that you’re safe to park your Peugeot 5008 or are you risking a ticket?

The Loading Zone Basics

Loading zones are restricted parking or stopping areas that are reserved for vehicles loading or unloading goods. Many commercial operators rely on these zones to legally stop and make their deliveries in a heavily built-up area. The rules and conditions for loading zones vary slightly by territory and state, so while you may be safe leaving your new Peugeot 5008 in one loading zone, in another city or state, you could be facing a ticket or fine.

The Regulations in Western Australia

Here in WA, the regulations are particularly complex. The regulations are specific to the local council areas, so it is best practice to avoid using a loading zone in this state. WA law states only “commercial” vehicles are permitted to park in loading zones, but even this is prefaced that the person must be continuously unloading or loading items into that vehicle. The official definition of a commercial vehicle is one that has been constructed, adapted, or fitted for the primary purpose of transporting goods. So, even if you are on business, it is not a good idea to leave your new Peugeot 5008 in a loading zone, even for a few moments.

The situation gets even more complicated in the City of Perth, where the commercial vehicle definition excludes vehicles that are constructed for transporting materials used in any business, trade, or industry. This means that even utes, wagons, and any vehicle that isn’t a light truck or delivery van can run into problems.

Even if you have a disability permit, you can’t get away with parking in a loading zone, here in WA. Unless otherwise stated, loading zones have a maximum time limit of 30 minutes, and the fine for illegal parking or use in a loading zone is currently $100.

Other States

Some states have more relaxed regulations for loading zone use. For example, Victoria allows buses, taxis, and passenger vehicles to stop in loading zones to pick up or drop off passengers. However, you are not permitted to wait or park in the loading zone.

If you use your 5008 for business purposes, you may be able to use a loading zone in Victoria if you have a business name permanently fixed to your vehicle that can be read from five metres away. Temporary signs or stickers placed on the windows or roof are not acceptable.

Queensland is another state with more lenient loading zone rules. Passenger vehicles are permitted to use a loading zone if the seatbelts and backseats have been removed, or if you’ve obtained a commercial vehicle permit. You may also stand in a Queensland loading zone for less than two minutes to drop off or pick up a passenger. This is extended to five minutes if your passengers are disabled. However, you are still not permitted to park in the loading zone.
